Vermont state wines

Ha. I was just about to write "don't laugh", but couldn't because I had a little chuckle myself. Anyway....Does anyone here have experience with wines from Vermont? Grape wines, not fruit wines, that is. There actually are a number of wineries. I know that we cannot talk about VT wines in the same sentance as CA/French/etc wines, but I am looking for a handful of the better quality wines, red/white/sparkling, to use for a just-for-fun VT products tasting.

Any input will be greatly appreciated!

"Better quality" is relative, when we are talking about Vermont wines. Honestly, you're better off sticking with the microbrewed beers.

I had a not-horrible white (Vidal, I think) from Snowfarm Vineyard a couple of years ago. However, I think now they only have a Vidal Icewine. I tried a version of that a couple of years ago, and it wasn't particularly good. Their reds were not worth much. Their Estate Riesling was innocuously bland, and while it wouldn't please fans of the Rieslings of Germany, Austria, or Alsace, it wasn't horrible.

I also tried some wines from Shelburne Vinegard, but none were particularly memorable (which also means they weren't horrible). I thought the Snowfarm wines were better, though. Of course, my data is a couple of years old.

In general, in Vermont, you will probably do better sampling whites than reds, and the winter-hardy hybrid wines will actually probably outperform the Vinifera varieties. Vermont isn't exactly a great place for wine. In New England, you can find better wines in MA, CT, and RI. And if you want wines from more northern areas, I found much better examples (whites, reds, and especially icewines) in Nova Scotia, of all places. But if you're really interested in VT products, I'd say Snowfarm is a good place to start, and I'd give Shelburne another try.

There are a few more links for VT wineries on this page:
