Vinexpo "Worldwide Survey of Sauvignon Blanc"

His Zieregg? If so, what year? His '97 Zieregg is still one of the finest SBs I've ever tasted. Mark Lipton

Yes. It was the Tement 2000 SB Zieregg.

At VINEXPO last week in Chicago, Wine Enthusiast Magazine sponsored a tasting called "A Worldwide Survey of Sauvignon Blanc"

They poured the following: SOUTH AFRICA: Nederburg 2003 CURICO, CHILE: Montes 2003 SONOMA COUNTY, CALIFORNIA: Matanzas Creek 2002 LOIRE VALLEY, FRANCE: Michel Bailly 2002 Pouilly-Fume Les Loges AUSTRIA: Tement 2000 Zieregg BORDEAUX, FRANCE: Ch.Smith-Haut-Lafitte 2001 Pessac Leognan

I arrived a little bit late and then missed the last wine, but up to then the consensus from the folks within earshot of me was as follows: Tement was the best, the Montes was great, and the Mantanzas Creek and Michel Bailly were both good.

Not very scientific, but there you have it. Perhaps somebody else in the NG was there and tasted all/got a different response? e. winemonger

A "Worldwide Survey"!!!

And nothing from New Zealand !!!

It is obvious to everyone that they wanted to keep the real competition out of the tasting.

Clearly, that must be because NZ SBs are out of this world, milud. ;-)

Why would Wine Enthusiast Magazine want to "keep the real competition out"? It was just a tasting at a convention. That said, I have to add that I think the Tement would measure up world class against any Sauvignon Blanc. Are you familiar with it? I've had Cloudy Bay, in case you want an example of which "world class" I'm thinking of.

I think that I was agreeing with st.helier that is was not much of a "Worldwide Survey" and on the other hand I have a very low opinion of the Wine Enthusiast Magazine. As for the Tement, I am unfamiliar with it but I could come up with some that I think would out shine the ones in the list also.

Which Wine Enthusiast Magazine (according to your header) called "A Worldwide Survey of SB." - right?

This hardly falls into the category of "just a tasting at a convention" - ( I am sure that the organisers of Vinexpo would be pleased to know that they were regarded as "just another convention" :-)

For the past 15 years or so, Marlborough (NZ) has been the standard by which Sauvignon has been measured.

No, I am not an apologist for or promoter of NZ wines - but nor do I think that any tasting, anywhere could be called a "worldwide survey" without including at least one NZ Sauvignon, or one of the better offerings from one of the cooler areas of Australia (Western Australia in particular)

I have absolutely no doubt that there are Sauvignons from Austria and Sancerre and many other regions which are simply sensational (we just never see them downunder - coals to Newcastle you understand!!).

My point was more directed at the very American way of sensationalising a very ordinary event by calling it a "World Series".

Only in the English speaking parts of the world. In the Francophonie the Loire valley is considered the yardstick, while Styria plays this role where German is spoken.

Right, of course.

  • Seriously, a couple of NZ Marlborough sauvignon blancs would have raised the level of the tasting.
