Winking Owl Cabernet from Aldi?

Anyone had this wine? I'm no wine expert, but for $2.49, it's not the best wine I've ever tasted, but for the price, for me it's drinkable.

Thank you. With this address, I'd bet my last shirt that this is a Gallo sub-label especially created for Aldi. This is supported by the fact that google finds not a single trace of the winery.

Anyhow: One can think about Gallo whatever one likes - but their wines are flawless, technically spoken.

I guess you got it 100 percent right:

Hey, the folks at Gallo are not going to let Two Buck Chuck people get away with no competition. they've done the same thing to entry level wines from the Veneto. I had a brand from Treviso, just starting out that they wiped out with their Bella Sera line aimed at Bolla. Can you say octopus?

Speaking of Aldi, has anyone had a chance to critique the Australian Aldi wines?

The labels all look like they are trying to rip-off big names (trying to copy the style).

If the German beer they had is anything to go by, I'm not holding much hope. Especially when you can go to Dan Murphy's [ yes I know ;-) ] and get something that is probably better for the same price.

So anyone had any experiences? These are all from the latest catelogue:

[all prices $AU) Dearborn Shiraz 3.99 Lonely Creek Chardonnay 3.99 Clare Valley Shiraz 5.99 Barossa Vallet Paddioch Shiraz 7.99 Broken Bay Coonawarra Cab Sav 12.99 Mornington Peninsula Merion Estate Pinot Noir 16.99

Gack! Sorry about that last post -

I have tried these three

Clare Valley Shiraz 5.99 Barossa Vallet Paddioch Shiraz 7.99 Broken Bay Coonawarra Cab Sav 12.99

The Clare was ok - drinkable but very simple in style; what you would expect for the price. The Shiraz was flabby, coarse and overoaked. The Coonawarra was a decent enough wine for drinking over the next year or so, but you can do better buying cleanskins and not just from Uncle Dan.

If you are in Melbourne, try Bocaccio cellars as they ofte have decent cleanskins and also remaindered Italian wines.
