which wine?

Nov 08, 2004 3 Replies

I am a relative novice at making wine choices but wish to buy a friend (who collects wine) a bottle of red with a price range of about 25-40pounds.

Could anyone make any suggestions as to which wine and where to obtain it from please?

any help would be greatly appreciated

A couple of suggestions, although since I'm not from anywhere that uses pounds my knowledge of availability is poor.

Cullen Diana Madeline Cabernet Merlot 01. Most earlier vintages are OK too, but the 02 isn't quite so great. Moss Wood Cabernet Sauvignon 01. (both Margaret River, WA, Australia)

From flicking through a couple of European price lists, I noticed that these utterly sublime and ageworthy wines seem to sell for less in England than Australia.

Rather vague advice, I'm afraid, but I would advise you to go to a local independent wine merchant to buy. If you say where you live and/or work maybe I or someone else could be more specific.

As you are a relative novice, and don't say anything about your friends taste, I would go for something safe like a claret - red Bordeaux. A good winemerchant should be able to help you with the choice too.

A gift certificate from a wine shop would be a nice choice.
