Wine Careers

After a 12 year career in the dog eat world of marketing I've decided to change gears and do something I really enjoy - wine.

I am presently enrolled in very prestigious wine studies program in NYC.

I have about 5 years of front of house experience, albeit p/t, as bartender, waiter and beverage manager. My questions is what/where would be the best place/positions to target after I graduate from the wine program?

I know its going to sound boring to you but working in a good wine shop gives you an idea of the dynamics of the business. Almost as good is working for a wholesaler but you could do this better if you dealt with consumers first.

Well, what kind of job were you dreaming of when you changed careers? Given your background, I'd say to try landing a job as a sommelier, but like Joe says you can start in a retailer if that's closer to what you're looking for.

Which one, where, with whom?

I would think seriously of combining your marketing experience with your wine knowledge. There are often openings with wineries or PR firms for people with this combination. Working at a good retail shop is highly valuable for contacts and practical learning, but expect to be treated like dirt.
