World's Top Pinot Noir

(Ping Mark Lipton / Ian Hoare)

I always take these sort of comparisons with a huge grain of salt - but, I seem to recall tasting this when we visited Martinborough.

If I remember correctly, at the time it was a little disjointed - however, a couple years ago I reported that I felt this was the best Pinot NZ had produced to date.

Now, others seem to agree.

And while nowadays I do not purchase wine to keep for longer than 5 minutes, I do have a couple bottles stashed.

Mark, I shall keep in the hope that your sojourn in Canterbury may still be on the horizon

Cheers

Without prejudice, do you really think that NZ can make the ultimate Pinot Noir? I still think the climate is a little cool even if recent Pinots that I have had have been rather pleasant.

Nice. Thanks for the heads up milord. Late last year a group of auks put together a butch of classic kiwi bottles for a bit of fun. We cannot afford DRC, but............

One of them was the 1996 vintage of this wine. If interested you can read the tasting notes here:

M'Lord-or is that Boss? Your post made me dig into the photo gallery to see where we had an excellent lunch in Martinbourough, turns out it was at Alana Estate where lunch was appearantly fish accompanied by a Chardonay the other dish is a mystery, though , I may have been drinking a Pinot from the color of the thing! As I recall it was an excellent lunch with good not great wine.

Hi st.helier - haven't tried that but one of the best NZ wines I've had was the Wild Earth Pinot Noir 2006 - from Central Otago. It went on to win a swag of international accolades.

My notes at the time -in 2008: Attractive nose of strawberry tarts, forest floor and loam. Powerful on the palate with fruits of the forest and savoury, smoky characters. Dry, long finish. A pinot for red wine drinkers who don't think they like pinot.

Cheers!

It is nigh unto a certainty. Expect us to debark onto your shores in Jan. 2012.

We had pencilled in a trip to see son, wife and new sprog, in January 2012. But they have prempted us by coming at Xmas this year...............saves a lot of money, But I miss lazy lunches at wineries in Otago and Waipera. Why can't the French have the same standard of welcomes like NZ. Will find out as off to the Loire in July.

Wow - straight out of winter in Indiana to the "tropics of antipodes" in high summer.

Bring your man-kini.

I look forward to guiding you through to Central Otago when you get settled

I guess the news is beginning to appear elsewhere. The URL showed up in a Google news headings list...amazing but not unbelievable!
