Yippee, I found a big red!

My sleuthing for the "big red" has taken me to California. Could be one of my "magic" wines.

A 2001 Petit Sirah, Clay Station, has met most of my desires so far. Fruity (I love black cherry, raisins and plum), thick and generous. If the tannins subside just a notch...WOW!!!!! 5*****

Don't know Clay Station, but PS is a good bet for big (tannic) wines. Glad you found something you liked! Dale

You may want to give the Grant Burge (AUS) Barossa Shiraz a bash. Its also black fruitish (cherry/currant) and very thick. A little spice and a little oak to round it off. I find it great with a peppered steak or lamb especially if you give it some time to breath - as it can be a little too full straight off the bottle.

Unfortunately I can't seem to find this Clay Station on any of my usual UK buying sites to give it a go.

Have you tried any Amarone (della Valpolicella)? It may meet your criteria. Valpolicella grapes (mainly Corvina) are dried out to produce very concentrated juice. Villalta, Masi, Tomassi & Zenato are good producers I've tried.

Congrats on finding one you like. This is just a start, I had just tasted a very good Shiraz from Australia. Now I'm hooked. I've never been fond of the California wines but I always have an opened mind. I tasted a lot of extremely good Cali wines last week now I'm hooked. Go figure.

New York has a lot of very good wineries both Long Island and the finger lakes. Personally, I haven't had a chance to try them yet, but since I've been shown how good other wines are outside of my limited tastes now I'm curious.

Hi Larry. Is this the Frey 2001 organic Petite Sirah (which is superb, in my opinion). I haven't seen clay station, and I am also here in Ontario, so I assume we are both shopping at LCBO.

Hi Ian,

This is taken from the LCBO website. It might help you find it.

Hi Larry, When you mentioned "(Delicato)", I wonder if it has any relationship to the Delicato (California) wines sold in the US. I have Delicato Shiraz on my shopping list based on reviews I've seen (can't remember where). I'll give the Shiraz a try for $4.99 US.

This particular wine is from California but is a Petit Sirah which is a totally different type of grape than used for the Shiraz.(I think)

Hi Larry, I was thinking more of the brand name. I'll have to check out a bottle at the liquor store and see if there's any mention of Clay Station on the label.

thanks for the info on that Clay Station wine, Larry, I will try it. As for the Petite Syrah, I read that the grape is called Durif in France, but it doesn't do well there due to the wetter climate. I tried to find the article where I read that, but to no avail. Ian
