Best book fo beginner?

I'm about to retire at age 62.

I would really like to get into wine making in a serious way. I've tried a couple of kits from Jim's Home Brew Supply in Spokane - but both times I thought the results were sort of poor.

Can anyone who has a lot of experience recommend some good reading on the subject? Amazon.com and Barnes & Noble.com both list a ton of books. Which are really useful? Beginner's book?

Has there ever been a FAQ for this group?

How does one get started in this? Are there any other good newsgroups on-topic. I did a search on "winemaking" and found this group as the only one active.

I'm a total newbie, so I'm throwing myself on your mercy. Any advice would be ENORMOUSELY appreciated. Thank you, Bob

I have a couple of links to some good forums that I have found. Being a Newbie myself these have been very informative.

Try Jon Iverson's book. It's pretty good as far as making wine from grapes is concerned. For more advanced topics, keep hanging around here and ask questions.

I thouroughly enjoyed Daniel Pambianchi's Techniques in Home Winemaking... I think it'd be a decent book for a beginner.

I always recommend C.J.J. Berry's "First Steps in Winemaking". This is a classic and should be in anyone's collection of winemaking books. It covers enough of the basics to not confuse a beginner and his recipes work. You may also want to pick up his "130 Winemaking recipes". Good recipes and the cartoons included are worth the price of the book. Then you might get Cox's "From Vines to Wines" and for the really serious Duncan and Acton's "Progressive Winemaking". There are lots of good books besides these but these will definitely get you going.
