Elderberry juice

Folks, I started a watermelon wine and was concerned that the color had settled out. I sent a message to Jack Keller who suggested that I could add a couple drops of Elderberry juice. Being fairly new to wine, I have no idea where I can get elderberry juice. He also suggested I could use Raspberry juice but it would change the flavor. I don't want to change the flavor, so it needs to be elderberry juice. Any suggestions???

Greg

Try a health food store. That's where I get mine. But in my experience elderberry juice also changes the flavor, which does not mean it's a bad thing. I like the added character it gives the wine. Larry

I'll only be adding a drop or 3. Shouldn't change the flavor, just add color. That's coming from Jack, so it's probably right. He mentioned that I could use Raspberry juice also, but that a lot more would be required, and it WILL change the flavor. So that's out.

You could try a Natural Red Colouring, made from concentrated grape extract. See -

if you are interested. Of course, if you live in North America then you'll want to try somewhere more local.

Greg,

Where do you live? The elderberries are ripening here in Maryland (north of Baltimore region). I 'm fortunate to have some bushes on my property but elderberries grow wild in many parts of the country. Maybe you can find a bush and pick a cup or two.

I gave my wife the first 4# of this years harvest for jelly but the rest will be used for wines and melomels.

I'm near White Marsh, MD. I have no idea what an elderberry looks like. Know of any pictures available on the web? I could have some growing in the woods out back of my house. Haven't got the time right now to do any research. Wife just had a baby, so my work is all on hold for a couple weeks.

What does the bush itself look like? How about the berry itself?

I'm one exit up I-95 in Joppa. This is good elderberry territory. They like to grow along the edges of forests. I've found a few good bushes on the side of Route 40, as you go down into the river valley past Allender Road.

There's a picture at:

I'm gonna head out there and take a look. I don't like to collect anything from the side of the road, but it will show me exactly what I'm looking for. Thanks.
