TN: Balgera Valtellina's From Thanksgiving

Had two Balgera Wines with my low fat, low carb meal Thursday.

1994 Valtellina Superiore La Frasca-Brownish red tones. Typical nebbiolo tobacco-rubber nose, low acidic fruit some tannins left, moderate finish. 83/100 Ready now. Suggested retail $15 US.

1995 Sassella- Red colour, tobaccoey nose, good fruit and acidity, good tannins presage a few more years of good drinking. 87/100, Suggested retail $15US

Balgera, a small winery in the Valtellina, are former clients of mine. See my website

for more details regarding US distribution. Traditionally these wines are lighter and more approachable with food than nebbiolo from the Langhe-more attuned to nebbiolo from the Novarra-Vercelli region.

The only Valtellina Superiore's I've tried were from Conte Sertoli Salis & Triacca-- both nicely crafted wines marrying zesty fruit with interesting darker flavors that you don't get in most New World reds. Regrettably, they're priced in the over-$20 range and beyond my budget for everyday drinking.

But for Thanksgiving I popped open a couple bottles of Balgera's frizzante (Terrazze Retiche di Sondrio IGT), a fizzified white chiavennasca (a/k/a nebbiolo). Dry, yet deliciously fun and totally slurpable... even my grandma liked it!
