Grape Yield

I'm starting to make arrangements to purchase grapes this Fall and many of the growers in the area that sell to home winemakers will sell 50 lb. pails of freshly crushed grapes.

I want to finish with 5 gallons, and am assuming I'll need an extra 1 gallon for topping up. So my question is this: will a 50 lb pail yield

6 gallons?

Thanks.

Not really. Figure about 13 pounds crushed for reds and a little more for whites, more or less.

No.

Depending on how much you press, red wine grapes will yield 1 gallon for every 13 to 15 pounds of grape. Some variances between varities. White wine grapes will yield a little less (requiring more grape per gallon). Assuming

14 pounds to yield one gallon, 6 gallons would require 84 pounds of grape.

Get two pails. One pail (50 lbs crushed) should yield from 3 gallons (US) to 3.5 gallons, depending on how hard you press. Yield will vary a bit, depending on the grape variety, ripeness, etc, but this should be pretty close.
