my new wine labels

Some shameless self promotion: I put some of my new wine labels here, and I'll probably have a few more by the end of the year:

By the way, I have a new inkjet printer - an Epson Stylus C82 - Epson has a few printers that use a new type of ink call DuraBrite, which I think is the only waterproof inkjet. I soaked a label in water overnight to test it, and it really is waterproof. I just wanted to pass that along since the question of waterproof labels comes up here occasionally.

They look pretty good to me. What application do you use to print them?

Also, as for waterproof inkjet ink, the Canon 4000 had waterproof ink, but as with many of Canon's better printers, this one is no longer around. Can't make any money on ink if the black cartrige lasts almost 4000 pages.

I design them using the Gimp running on linux, and usually print them from the Gimp too.

I bought an Epson C82 about 3 months ago and I have been extremely happy with its performance --- especially the "leech proof" printing of my wine labels. Even complete immersion in water when I am removing labels doesn't alter the print quality. I also like the fact that I have separate cartridges for each colour!

Terrific Labels! Love the wineberry labels, I think the first one with the simple white background and red berries with shadows is my favorite.

Here's some of my labels:

Those are great labels. Good work.

Where do you guys find such good pictures to use on your labels? And how many of you take your own pictures?

Jon.

I personally use pictures of all kinds from any source that I can -- digicam, clip art on net, old photos from the dim distant past. Last year I spent 5 weeks touring around France at veendage time and took pictures of every conceivable kind from every conceivable angle of every conceivable grape, building, bottles (empty and full), Most of them I ditched when I got back home but thats the great advantage of a digicam. I do quite a lot of labels for special occasion wines like weddings, birthdays etc and try and theme them for each "customer" as they want. I do these at cost plus about 5% to cover the proofs and glitches I make and enjoy providing a service to other wine makers. I have never bothered with a web site so far so I can't show them to you but I have done hundreds of designs over about 4 years and my labels are similarly improved as my skills have developed. It is nice to be able to provide a service which people appreciate

Wow!!!!!!

Now I'm really impressed.

I thought I was the only graphic artist who used CANVAS.

If I had a dollar for every pizza ad I did using that program why I'd have a fistfull of dollars.

Very nice, Greg! The Cherry Melomel 2001 is my favorite. And Death By Mead is a great one.

Thanks. I took the pictures myself - the berries and dandelions are the actual ones that went into making the wines. I had a lot of great dandelion pictures to work with, but most of them didn't work well as a wine label.

I think you can export the slides as images from powerpoint. I'm too lazy to open it up to look though. Since we have illustrator at work I use that to design my labels.

W.C. Fields has many great quotes, and a few more pertaining to wine! Great fellow he must have been.

I use plain white paper and a color laser printer. The labels are attached using an Elmer's Glue Stick. They come right off in water for reuse.
