Racking from a SS Tank

We racked from a 300L SS tank to a plastic tub and back into SS using a siphon hose. It took forever. Could I just draw from the spigot or do I risk pulling out too much sediment?

I always rack from the spigot. If this is your first racking, it's possible to have some sediment pass through, though that will get resolved in subsequent rackings.

Siphoning 300L must have taken hours. Have you considered using a pump or gas (if it's a closed tank)?

I always pump from above using my buon vino superjet pump (bypass the filter which I only use on white wine) for the first racking. My pump only uses 1/2 inch tubing so it still takes a while, but I just have a drink and don't worry about it. My reason for taking liquid from above the first racking is that my pump doesn't handle the gross lees so well. If there is too much sediment a siphon would get plugged up as well, After the first racking I go from the bottom with the aid of the pump. It never occurred to me to use pressure to push out the liquid since I have a pump. Do you think it is better for the wine to use gas over using a pump?

Or you could get a hose with a bigger diameter. Last week we racked a

125L of Riesling juice from a plastic drum like that under 10 mins and about 1/2 of that time was taken by stopping the flow to change receiving containers. We don't use a wnd in this setup so you have to be careful towards the end with the sediment, but you could switch then to a regular siphon setup.

On my 200L SS tanks, I've replaced the spigots with valves and sanitary tri-clamp fittings. To address the issue of sediment, I've installed small SS elbow joints to the exit openings, inside the tanks. The elbows are cut down slightly, and when I threaded them in, I made sure the openings were facing up. In this manner, only the first few ounces of juice contain any sediment when the valve is opened.

Darin, I like this idea. Do you have any photos of this setup or more details? Did this take any soldering/welding?
