Go to google.com and do an image search on "elderberry". You'll get a lot of pictures of what the bushes and berries look like. They're just ripening now in northern Maryland so they should be ripening in your area very soon. Wait until they're fully black and the berry clusters are drooping a bit to make sure they're fully ripe.

I don't believe you'll find elderberries in deep forest. They need more sun than is found there.

Hedgerows around farmland are a good bet.

Probably; they haven't comnpletely ripened yet in Centre County, PA.
