Re: Has anyone made a wine press?

Any suggestions.

Pete,

I have. The basket is made out of solid red oak (slats), metal plumbing strapping, and stainless steel machine screws & nuts. The base is oak plywood (2 3/4" layers) with solid red oak around the edges (to direct the liquid to the spout). A box-section steel structure begins underneath the base, joins to 1 vertical riser on each side, and then to a cross-member about 6" above the top of the basket. The 6" allows enough space for the scissor jack from my Suzuki Sidekick to be placed above the full basket and cranked down to press the contents. The nice thing about the scissor jack is that I can drive it with my cordless reversible drill -- very easy and efficient.

If I were to build another exactly the same, it would probably cost me about $50 to $70 (Canadian) -- I spent a little more on mine, trying things that didn't work so well and then revising the design :-) To build it, you'll need a table saw to cut the basket slats and base, metal snips to cut the plumbing strapping, a hacksaw for the steel bits, and wrenches, etc. A reciprocating saw with a metal-cutting blade is highly recommented to speed up the steel cuts, but not necessary...

I have some plans that I whipped up in Visio that are pretty close to what I actually built -- I'll try to remember to put the images into a Word document, along with a couple pictures and email it to you.

Cheers, Richard
