I normally rinse my corks in several changes of warm water, until the water runs clear instead of brownish. Then dump the corks into a collander until they're just damp, then cork. (They compress easier and go into the bottles more smoothly if they're moist.) You don't want them so wet that they drip water when you compress them. Hope that helps. Merry Christmas!

I have a Portuguese corker and basically there's not a lot to do. Keep it clean and lubricate the working parts if you think it needs it. Don't put any oil-based stuff on the cork compression parts as you will introduce oil onto your corks.

I always use dry corks and never had a problem.

Everyone is now in bed --- me too in a minute. A long pleasant day.

See my posts elsewhere -- but I have been running one for 2+ years with no maintenance other than keeping it clean. After use I put 2 plugs of paper kitchen towel through it.

I use dry corks directly from the pack.

Congratulations. I got mine several years ago and love it. I worried about maintenance but have never had to do anything to it except keep it clean and dry. I use my corks dry. I have been using the artificials lately and have no trouble with them dry either.
