Reality Check - Vine Irrigation Needs

The freeze was really bad on my bunch grapes. I think all the fruiting canes are dead. All new growth has been from the trunks - and not much of that on a couple of varieties. I have a small Jupiter vine that still hasn't put out at all. My muscadines came through much better and will probably bloom.

You are right, Casey. I missed that. Which exaggerates the lack of need for significant irrigation even more.

A gal. is 231 cu.in. while a cubic foot is 1728 cu. in.

Therefore 27000 gal per week would convert to only 3609 cu. ft./ wk. Convert this to inches of rainfall per acre per week by dividing by 43560 and you get about 1 tenth of an inch per week. This certainly does not sound extreme. It would also suggest that in Alabama the need for irrigation would be pretty rare.

Hi Charles

Yes Get acceptable growth combined with good disease resistance. The only problem we normally have around here are powdery mildew (from the summer rain showers) and rust mite. Both easily controlled. cropping rates are about 2.5 to 3 tons to the acre. In the Riverland (lot hotter and dryer) they really pump the water into the vines and get up to 20 tons to the acre.

Hi Dick. Our vines are surviving but we shall see how it goes at summer's end. I'd like to meet you some time. I met Stephen Bailey for lunch this week and found him to be a very nice and knowledgeable guy. We Alabama grape growers are rare and should learn from each others experiences. If you'd like to meet, give me a call some time. I live in Madison and work in Huntsville. My work number is 256-535-2184 and mobile number is 256-289-1029. Looking forward to speaking with you!

Thanks, Charles
