indoor vine pests

Hi all,

I have a vine that is really taking off in my conservatory, trouble is I have noticed what looks like eggs, tiny and opaque. They are not on the leaves, only on the stems and laid randomly. I have not noticed any insects either on the vine or in the conservatory so I guess they are laid at night. I have been using an insect spray on the vine to kill the eggs with some success, what I would like to know is , can anyone give me some idea as to what it maybe? A long shot I know, but if someone can point me in the right direction I would be most grateful. Thanks in advance, Lee.

You may not need to worry. I have this phenomenon with my vines. Your use of the word "random" struck me. After discovering many opaque egglike things on my vines, I assumed they were in fact eggs. But in all descriptions, I couldn't find anything that suited their randomness. Most insects lay eggs in clusters (from what I've been able to gather). If your little egglike things are not in clusters, and are "random", they may not be eggs at all. They may be pearls, or sap balls. These are natural exrescenses found on vines during conditions of high humidity or temperature. I don't think the function or structure of these pearls is fully understood, but they are not to be confused with eggs and are not harmful to the vine. It seems to be a natural reaction.

After discovering them on my vines for the first time I went about brushing them off. Now that I know what they are, I leave them.

If you're not sure, take photo and get a second oppinion.
