Sorry OT: Soda?

I know this is ia wine group, but beer makers are here too, so I assume the possibility that some of you may have also tried making soda. Is homemade soda better than the popular brands like Coke/Pepsi? After having proper tools, would it be worth the trouble? Is it possible to make gallons at a time cheaper than the professional kind? (I want to make cola and the old style vanilla/cream soda...)

If you know of a newsgroup that would be able to answer these questions in more detail, then please forward it...

I have not done it in ages but I want to do it again this fall. I bought a bottle of hires rootbeer extract, probably a couple of dollars, and followed the recipe. It is probably 1/2 to 1% alcohol so be aware of that . Easy to make and great stuff. Most any wine shop has the extract, recipes and instructions. It is worth doing.

You could always cheat and visit your local discount wholesaler, like Sam's Club. They sell bags of Coke syrup for around $45 US. I don't know what the mix ratio is supposed to be but I'd love to find out. The one catch is that you have to be a food service industry person.
