substitute for raisins?

Oct 14, 2004 2 Replies

Greetings, fellow winemakers.

i just bought a bunch of jalapenos - they were on sale for .99 cents a lb.... but most recipes I've seen say to add raisins.

Golden raisins are about $2.50 / lb here.... would there be any substitute for the raisins in order to add some body? welch's white juice? or any other flavoured stuff?

thanks. Rick

I would substitute Welch's frozen Niagara White Grape Juice. Figure 2 cans per gal by it self. For raisin wine I have seen about 6 lbs per gal. So figure 1 can is equivalent to 3 lbs and you will not be to far off. Anyone have a beter equivalence?

I have always seen recipies that have 1 lb of raisins OR 1 can of white grape concentrate. And as a body enhancer you use 1 lb (or 1 can) per gallon.

My observations come from Jack's website (plug). He is the expert on country wines.
