white film on top of wine in carboy?

I have several batches of wine from last year aging in carboys. On only 1 of the carboys (actually, it's a 1 gallon jug that was extra from one of the other

6 gallon carboys), there's a thin white film floating on the top of the wine. It's only about 1-2 mm. in thickness. The larger 6 gallon batch is fine (at least visually). Any ideas what this is? My inclination is to toss it out...or should I just scoop it out and bottle the wine? By the way, it's a cabernet/merlot blend.

Thanks Charles. I am familiar with variable capacity tanks. I thought Andrew was referring to some other type of gadget, but perhaps not. lum

We bought them from a company here in Australia, called Flextank. They meant for "normal" winery tanks, and consist of a disc of foam wrapped in an inert plastic (the guy used to work for Tetrapak), with an extra "wiper" of inert plastic around the edges.

He makes them to order, and to whatever size of expansion chamber you might have. They cost us AUD20 each. For further info on the company, see

though it doesn't mention the discs. We are also looking into some of his ullage bags.
