chemicals found in scotch whisky

Are there any chemicals found in scotch whisky that are thought to be harmful for humans? Please no alcohol jokes here, I am asking sincerely. For example, is phenol good or bad? It just seems that something that is sitting around in a piece of wood for over a decade, well, it might have some stuff in it.

Yes. It will have some "stuff" in it. And everything can be listed as a chemical component. We've had wine aging in wood for a long time. And some wine has been sitting around in leaded decanters for a long time, too, not to mention pottery with lead content. I feel relatively certain that, if there were constituents of drink that were dangerous, California or the EU would have figured out how to plaster a truly obnoxious label on the bottle!

Jeff,

I went through all the links on the site. Very good "stuff." It makes me want to reach for a pipe and start smoking some Borkum Riff rum..... heh heh heh.

Thanks! But one thing that I have always held to: I smoke (and drink!) what *I* like; not what somebody else says that I should like.

That's fairly advanced for seventh grade John.

What about "smoke the hog?"

Have you heard that one?

I have, and hope you will refrain from posting tasting notes! :-O

Along these lines, when I was in an undergraduate academic male touring choir, our bus pulled up to a restaruant/jerky distributor whose sign depicted an interesting proclamation. This was around the time of the movie "Field of Dreams" whose mantra was "Build it and they will come". The sign, then, asserted, "Smoke it and they will come". Laughs abounded.

Okay, back to being a distinguished, malt savoring gentleman. Or something like that!

Whisky Johnie- Oh, whisky is the life of man. Whisky Johnie. Oh, I'll drink whisky when I can, Oh, whisky for my Johnie.

'Twas whisky made me pawn my clo'es. Whisky Johnie. An' whisky got me a broken nose. Oh, whisky for my Johnie.

Oh, whisky drove my mother mad, Whisky Johnie. An' whisky nearly killed my dad; Oh, whisky for my Johnie.
