Slainte, y'all

Each year when I have my physical I hold my breath, but not out of any health anxiety, per se. I'm 43, pretty healthy, work out regularly, so I'm not really worried about or expecting bad news.

My big concern is that diabetes runs rampant in both sides of my family, & so I need to be mindful of this. Every year when I get the results of my bloodwork I hold my breath for the "sugar" number. While I'm certainly concerned about it given the "important" implications, I have to admit my first thought is that if I start trending towards/into diabetes I'd have to give up my beloved cabinet of single malts, incl about 15 bottlings from the Scotch Malt Whisky Society & about 3 dozen other drams.

I just got the call from the doctor. My sugar is great & he doesn't think in the next few years it'll be a problem, if ever, as long as I continue taking good care of myself.

Well alright! I'll be celebrating tonite w/a couple (wee) drams from the SMWS.

I've had type II diabetes for around 12 years now. I've found that drinking whiskies doesn't increase my blood glucose level. Beer does (I don't drink Lites). Check frequently 'til ya know what's happening, 'cause YMMV.

For what it's worth,I have been a type 1 diabetic since 1975,I started to drink Malt Whisky in 1971 and have continued ever since. When I was first diagnosed a nurse told me about her diabetic brother who worked on the oil rigs in Aberdeen, he drank whisky with no diabetic reactions.Whisky when consumed does not produce sugar she informed me and I have never had cause to doubt her words and enjoyed a dram or two over the years. I am not a frequent contributor to this newsgroup but enjoy the varied threads daily, thanks to all for much enjoyment in the past and hopefully in the future. Michael

"YMMV" - Your Milage May Vary"?? First time I've seen this applied to having a dram or two!! Or at least applied to keeping an eye on the blood sugar content derived from having a dram or two!

The latter. Different people's metabolisms seem to react differently to different foods/drinks. Just a caveat for the unwary.
