I've enjoyed both of those, though I haven't had the Xingu in so long that I can't remember what it is (a schwarzbier?). The imperial stout is probably my favorite Samuel Smith brew, though it's tame compared to something like Storm King.

Xingu, good stuff. Best schwarzbier I've had. Near the top of my "beers that don't suck brewed in hot countries" list.

Xingu is indeed a schwarzbier but its been a damned long time since I've had it and have heard some unpleasant stories about changes in recipe, etc. I agree about the SSIS, its one of their more reliable beers.

Although very fond of stouts and porters, I've always felt that imperial stouts were driving the idea of "stout" just a little bit too far. But if you like them, who cares what I think?

This is the first Xingu sixer I've bought that I didn't have to travel to Colorado for. It's been quite a while since I had it but it's a fine tasting black beer that, for sure, would be a nice thirst quencher in the summer. The price is ~US$10 but I can live with that.

The Impy Stout from Sam Smith I had before *many* moons ago but it left enough of a favourable impression that I jumped on a few bottles as soon as I saw them. The price of ~US$3.50 is no deterent for me, for sure. I. Love. It.

You betcha and it's a dandy.

The imperial stout

I've had Storm King and it's the cat's meow but SS's Impy I love in different ways. Just like Old Rasputin and Rogue Impy Stout and Bell's Expedition etc are different...damn...we in the US sure make some awesome stouts. I still have a Speedway sitting around, aging. ;^)

If they've changed to formula for Xingu, I can't complain. The stuff tastes way good.

You know what, the best schwarzbier I've had to date is that wonderful Sprecher Black Bavarian that I had last year at the Great American Beer Festival.

Ya know, I'd forgotten about that one, had it not too long ago. Liked it a lot, but not as much as my admittedly old recollection of Xingu. Would like to do a side-by-side, but Sprecher isn't distributed around here.

Bummer on that, their Vienna (Special Amber was the label I think) was great, great stuff. Love a good Vienna, there aren't nearly enough of them around.

Xingu is my highest rated schwarz at ratebeer but its admittedly an old rating. More recent high ratings include Kostritzer, Sprecher Black Bavarian, and a nice one tasted at GABF from Ozark Brewing - Friesian Black Lager.

My lowest rated one is Black Abbot (Neuzeller Kloster-Brau Schwarzer Abt)

Must be schwarzbiers time as I just had a new excellent example from the newish Fort Collins brewery called Kidd lager. It's great.

I'm not Randal, but I did stop in at the brewery while in CO for the GABF. The Scharzbier was very new (IIRC) at that point, and was very good. The three beers I taste there were all either good or very good. All lagers, incidentally.

Checking my ratings I've got Xingu and the Sprecher at the same rating. Kostritzer is decent stuff as well. Like you, I thought the Black Abbot sucked.

I'm a little disappointed there aren't more schwarzbiers around. Good stuff, more breweries need to start cranking them out.

Actually it was the 2002 GABF! I should try and get back to it this year.

What Joel said.

I've had the 'Z' lager - a very flavorful slightly smoky amber lager. The Kidd schwarzbier - very chocolately and delicious. I was surpised by the Retro Red Ale. Normally I don't buy reds but this one is really great. Good depth of flavor and a really nice hop balance. A great session beer IMO. I've heard that the Ft Collin's crew is mainly from the defunct HC Berger - but I don't know if that's true or not.

Oh yeah, H.C. Berger. I remember liking their Red Banshee and Indego. They had other stuff that I either can't remember or didn't make it to Casper.
