Musta' been a bad bottle. Ol' Crusty is my fave off-the-shelf barleywine. Think I'll have one tonight.

I also like Old C...and I'll have one in a few. My question is, how much abuse did that bottle take to make the 10%abv BWSA go bad? Or are we talking about a problem that occured during bottling?

It is possible that you do not like this beer. When fresh, Old Crusty is a very strong flavored high alcohol beer. which can be a lot to handle to an untrained palette. Try some other barleywines and then come back to Old Crusty again to see if your opinion improves.

All good points but there's no way I could see anybody complaining about it having a medicine taste. And I'm drinking a 2003 bottle right now and it's tasting just...hang on...took a sip and swished it back and forth in my mouth. Yes. It could be described as having a mediciney taste. Note: I'm drinking this bottle at room temp.

To bluestringer, see if you can find the Sierra Nevada Bigfoot later this year.(or, if you're on the east coast, an Old Horizontal from Victory)

Ok, I will. I hope to see those here sometime soon. This was my first taste of a barlywine, so it could be me not being use to the high alcohol content.

Yeah, I have my own limit of acceptibility when it comes to a "beer"'s alcoholic content.. I didn't mind the old Sam Adams Trippel Bock that showed up here years ago but...I generally find beers with an abv % of

My first taste of Old Crustacean was very interesting. I developed a taste for it, though I thought my wife was going to throw up and die when I offered her a second swig...............

I would also throw in Anchor Steam's Old Foghorn to the list of barleywines.

To your note, Bill, I just had my first Samichlaus and I have to say.....WOW.. very interesting. What does it taste like after it ages a bit, say a couple of years. Or is this one that will age?

Additionally, I was able to pick up Stone's Vertical Epic and their 8th anni ales, at a Bev Mo in Gilroy, CA. Can't get them where I am.. Also very tasty..........

I prefer the Impy Stout and IPA to the Barley Wine.

I think I've only had 5 or 6 bottles of the stuff in totem and I never did let any of them age, which they should do well.(going by the alc content)

I didn't even try to get into the Vertical Epics. The 8th Anniversary I may give a shot next time I feel like having a shipment come my way.

Sounds about right. One of the most bitter beers there is. Don't drink it anywhere near cold.

Except that the 120 IBU's can be a shock to someone who's never had it, and could easily be pegged as a "medicinal" like flavor.
