I agree, its why I've been involved in many debates on the RB forum defending the qualities of Dortmunder or Helles lager, or even dunkels. There are alot of ratings on RB where they just say "oh its watery and thin" and give it a 2.8 and then give a mediocre Imperial Stout a 4.4. given that inherent bias, you have to look at the "best by style" lists over the overall Top 50 list. So I support the hedonic method of rating, but I also agree that one must alter your expectations when rating different styles. But i guess there are just too many beer geeks out there that won't accept a beer unless its ultra-bold.
I agree, and I've chided some of the RB raters before about that. The only way around it is to drink for yourself. (its also why I've found some Stone beers to be over-rated. Their pale ale is awesome. Arrogant Bastard, Double Bastard and old Guardian are just OK)
