Dunkel Beer

Was in NYC again this past weekend and in an effort to try every beer unknown to me, I ordered a dunkel. It's surprising because while it's almost as dark as Guiness, it's as light tasting as a pilsner. Definately worth a repeat.

Any idea which one? "Dunkel" is simply the German word for "dark," and there are hundreds, if not thousands of these things. And the flavors run the gamut from dry (Jever) to intensely malty (any number of Bavarian dunkels).

D*mn! Now I've got to go back and find out for sure, but I think it was this... Weihenstephan.

Every beer from Warsteiner is light, even their Pils. And I am happy that they do not sell their dark beer here in Germany!

I checked with my friend and she said it was Wurzburger Beer.

A that would be schwarzbier, would it not? That would explain the reference to its being as dark as Guiness. "Black beer," whereas many "dunkles" are less dark than that.

Yes, thanks, that's it. I'll have to look around in my area for this. WHo'd a thunk I'd have to learn German to enjoy a good beer.
