Kulbacher Monkshof

I *think* I had this many years ago but I haven't seen it "locally". Another goody is Köstritzer Schwarzbier.

I remember getting this at the Peculiar Pub in NYC "back in the days".

Very tasty, but haven't seen it in years.

Wow someone else remembers this one. I got it all the time in the late 70's and early 80's in Mass. Last time I had it was 1992 from some specialty store in D.C. Man I am not sure there ever was a better beer. Puts any German export to shame. Even Hacker Pshor. I checked out the Vintage cellars web site. They list the Moncschof WURZGARDEN RIESLING . I for one dont like the Riesling beers. There is nothing like a dark lager.

I did some quick searching on the various ways of spelling Monkshof. Looks like the large brewery closed in 1999. Beer is now brewed by Kulmbacher Brauerei.

The Mönchshof Schwarzbier is very available in Franconia (Germany, that is -- of which Kulmbach is a part)). Not that this helps you directly, but it is still being brewed. I'd put it in the same class as Köstritzer (for me that's daming with faint praise) -- an OK beer.

We get the Monchshof Schwartzbier in KC. It comes in a 500ml swingtop. I thought it was pretty tasty. You'd think it would be available on the east coast.
