Us university types tend to disappear to cabins in the woods for the summer. I don't have said cabin, yet, but it'll be interesting to see if thing pick up here after the summer.

Bryson's back over in alt.beer, so we'll see if the Cult of Lew starts hanging around in both groups again and picks things up a bit.

I've been wondering too, as I continue to lurk. I did recently see a few posts by Lew Bryson but there has been precious little depth here recently.

They must have all gone to some secret web based message board sponsored by Communist Martyrs High School.

There are more fora out there than there used to be. Look at the web, with beeradvocate, ratebeer, the Burgundian Babble Belt, and on and on. Usenet just doesn't have that kind of visibility. And over on uk.rec.food+drink.real-ale, there's still plenty of the kind of thing you seek - except that it's mostly about British beer, of course.

Homebrewers have been steered over to the homebrewing newsgroups. Brewery shills got tired of the put-downs and gave up. Retailers are trying to survive in a tougher economy. University geeks? They should just be coming back on-line about now. And maybe you weren't reading when a British brewer posted a link to an article about Belgium's ultra-traditionalist lambic brewery, Cantillon? Or when a Belgian beer fan posted a notice about his new Belgium-beer-focused Yahoo! discussion group ... ?

Bite your tongue. Hard.

Anyway, enough whining. Where are *your* sage words on great beers tasted, great beer destinations travelled, and great beer banter in general?

In this age of dictated-content and pseudonymous, fluff-filled web boards, USENET in general is dying off. A shame really, but it never really recovered from the influx of AOL types. (Cue angry response from Gen-Xer who never really knew classic USENET, but will feel free to comment about it anyway.)

Well my favorite beer of all time is John Courage Imperial Stout (1982 vintage) and I'd drink it with my groat clusters every morning if I could find and afford it.

Here at Ralph Spoilsport's House of Beer we're overstocked with 1996 Cantillon Kriek, Rose de Gambrinus and Geueze having bought many cases at extremely deep discounts when distributorship changed. Nice to have ot so affordable I can even cook with it -- working on perfecting chicken medallions with mushrooms in Geueze sauce. We have a little Chimay around the place too, along with several other Belgians and a chest freezer full of homebrewed pseudolambics (Kriek, Framboise, Peche Cassis, Geueze de Vigneronne) -- a couple of kegs of homemade sweet meads and ciders kind of round everything out and, of course, for lawnmower time, we go up to Trader Joe's and grab Starobrno.

A recent find is Duchess de Bourgogne, a nice Belgian "Oud Bruin" that is a knocoff of the now extinct Rodenbach Alexander. Be vewwy quiet -- we're hunting cases.

I'm not 100% sure what you're talking about - but if it's Cantillon Vigneronne, I can assure you there's nothing pseudo about it, and 100% lambic. Cheers, Joris

You got it -- and there should have been a comma between Peche and Cassis.
