You don't go to Spain for the beer. It's pretty much a bunch of pale lagers from industrial-strength breweries, with the occasional amber or dark exception. There's a brewpub in Madrid and (I think) one in Barcelona; what I remember about the one in Madrid was that the beer wasn't interesting, but rather unassuming. If you're lucky, you might find a place with imported beer from Belgium or Germany. That's usually about as good as it gets.

"Everything about the country primarily mentions the wines" for a good reason.

There's a reason for that.

We got back a month ago and what a beautiful country Spain is. We flew into Madrid then too a fout hour trainride south to Malaga. We stayed there two days then bussed to Ronda for seven days. Then back to Madrid for two more days before flying home. Everywhere we went had Cruz Campo on tap which tasted very good, partly because Spain was hot and dry. I also recall Mahou (?) which was also popular, but the beer I liked the best I discovered on the last day in Madrid. It was called Cerveza Toastados which is probably a type of dark beer and not a brand. I could have just drank that.

Everywhere you go they give you a plate of olives to go with your drink, but the best snack with a beer was in Malaga. A man came up to the outdoor cafe where we were sitting carrying a large drawer-shaped box on his head. He put this on a stand, openned it and started selling hot, roasted almonds. For one euro you got a small funnal of them and for 2 euors, a slightly larger funnel of almonds. We were just leaving and I got one to go, but if he had gotten there earlier he could have retired at the end of the night.

Of all the places we ate and drank, my favorite was just outside of Ronda in San Francisco at a place called the Bar El Pilar which served a glass of beer for one euro...

I'll probably go back next spring.

Yes, I had lived in Madrid for several years while in the Air Force (some 20 years ago)

While they don't have many beers that are "outstanding", the Mahou "Cinco Estrella" (five stars) is one of the more popular and tasty beverages. Also, if you are a dark beer fan - see if you can still find Bock Dahm (?). The San Miguel over there is interesting, and wasn't pasteurized - so it was always an adventure opening a bottle. Some were absolutley phenomenal, and others couldn't be poured out quick enough. Generally, that was their lighter beer.
