Note that - legally spoken - Krems ist not part of Wachau but of weinbaugebiet Kremstal.

I'm not sure there'll be time for going to Spitz, but if we can cram it in, I'll definitely pay Fohringers a visit.

I haven't planned anything yet. In addition, my knowledge of Austrian wine is limited, so I'd really appreciate any suggestions you - and others - might have. Preferably wineries/producers in or as close to Krems as possible - as we not planning on renting a car.

Right in Krems I can think of 2 offhand: Weingut Aigner

And in Kremstal (the surrounding region) I would recommend: Nigl

Winzer Krems (Austria's largest cooperative) would be my third choice; before going there I'd recommend Bertold Salomon's Weingut Undhof. He is a most charming person and speaks English evry well. He was the former CEO of the Austrian Wine Marketing Board.

Btw, Noitz im Kloster Und (wine shop) and Salomon-Undhof (winery) are within walking distance. For Landhaus Bacher, be sure to make a reservation in time and take a taxi.

My restaurant recommendations:

2) Zum Kaiser von Österreich, Körnermarkt 9, Krems Tel. (02732) 86001,

4) Loibnerhof, Unterloiben (7 km from Krems, on the way to Dürnstein), Tel. (02732) 82890 (closed on Mondays and Tuesdays) Has a very beautiful garden - go there for lunch on a sunny day, preferably not on a Saturday or Sunday (too many people...). Take the train to Unterloiben (stop on request), walk down to Loibnerhof, have lunch, walk along the Danube to beautiful Dürnstein, then take the boat (or train) back to Krems.

Excellent recommendation, one I forgot to mention. Located in the former monastery ("Kloster") Und, under the same roof as Franz Noitz' Weinhandlung (wine shop), and within walking distance from Undhof estate.

Excellent, too, including a very good choice of Emmerich Knoll's wines. (Josef Knoll, the owner, is Emmerich's cousin.)
