I can get this at Binny's in McHenry for $9 / 750 ml bottle....I don't care for "fruit" beers and I'd consider this as fruity as the monk on the front of the bottle...We're talking abooot Bernardus Abt 12 (Quadrupel) made in Watou, belgium here right?

I had the pleasure of drinking this at Choice City Butchers in Ft Collins Colorado last Saturday...on tap! I really liked the subtle flavours and dryness of this dubbel that I seem to not get in the 750ml bottles..

No, we're not. We're talking the beer alternately known as Westvleteren. Which has no label.

That would have been a neat trick. The only Chimay kegged for tap dispense is the Triple ("White"), AFAIK. You sure it wasn't the Triple?

But it's a bottle-conditioned beer. I'd rather have it that way, if I had my druthers.

No, we're not, at least not for quite a few years now. The brewery that markets the St Bernardus line used to have a license with the Trappists at Westvleteren to brew a "St Sixtus" line of beers, but that went by wayside quite a while back, so the brewery re-badged these beers "St Bernardus." Whether they're exact clones of the beers produced at the abbey's brewery will remain a matter of speculation.

Also, Westvlenteren's brewery generally doesn't bottle in 750s; they sell their beer in unlabelled 33cl brown bottles. The stuff is quite hard to get, and it's getting tougher; the demand regularly outstrips the supply.

There is no fruit in either the Westvleteren or the St Bernardus beers. The perception of "fruity" flavors is a by-product of the yeast and fermentation temperatures.

Chimay ain't what it used to be, dewd.

Apparently nothing is what it used to be...I picked the wrong time to be getting into craft brews...I should've been onto this back BEFORE I was married!

I have a problem w/ communication (which I'm sure is obvious.) So I thought I would take the time and try to make myself coherent. Yes, I do know that no fruit adjunct is added. What I meant by 'fruityness' is that the profile is unbalanced to me (no hop/malt elements) in a somewhat unplesant manner. And Chimay Red is about how far out into "fruityness" I like to venture and still have a pleasing tasting experience.

Too bad for me I'll never have the chance to have sampled either of these brews...

Oh...forgot to mention...from the 750 ml bottle I had the most heavenly buzz from so little a sample...so I'm not completely dowing this brew...just not my taste of tastes...
