Bartons Arms

Real ale bit: Visiting the Bartons in Brum and a couple of other NI pubs on Wednesday night.

Anyone recommend a cheap-n-cheerful curry house nearby?

There's no need to go anywhere else. I was in the Bartons Arms yesterday. You really do need to try their own curries. Its their speciality - as well as the range of beers. Superb.

I don't know why, but I forgot about their own food - is it still a bit more Thai than Indian? But if memory serves, there was more western dishes too.

I've not been in a couple of years, but the pub itself - its atmosphere & architecture, the beers & the food were all excellent.

Cheers, MikeMcG.

Yes, it is _very_ Thai, but with a _very_ good range and excellent quality with good prices.

Definitely one not to miss, and very difficult to leave.

Over the road there is a nearby parade of shops attached to an Aldi with a small cafe, newsagents, greengrocer etc, but i didn't see any curry houses.

We spent an evening with my son in Birmingham at the beginning of February and greatly enjoyed everything about The Bartons Arms - especially the beer. As we were keen to eat balti rather than Thai, we went to the Dawat Balti at 300 Ladypool Road, Sparkbrook, B12 8JY.

This is on the other side of the city centre from The Bartons Arms, but worth the trip. They allow you to take in your own drink, so we filled up some containers at the pub. I can tell you that JHB and balti is a hell of a combination!

The Sparkbrook area is known as The Balti Triangle as there are loads of good eating houses there.

For some reviews of the Diwat Balti, go to
