Had a rather smoky gorgeous beer yesterday. The ABV wasn't on the pump clip and they didn't know behind the bar.

Hi,
I tried finding a website for Tower Brewery, but they dont have one.
That has always worried me. Say I pop in for a drink and then want to drive home. I really want to know the ABV so that I can judge how much I can safely ;-) drink. I recall being served a pint of "mild" once. It turned out to be ABV 6.5%. I'd assumed it would be about 3.2%. I soon realised that it was a hell of a lot stronger than I'd expected. "Well the locals call it mild" says the barmaid.

Mild does not mean weak, often milds are lower strength, a mild should be less bitter than a bitter.
These days people tend to assume that Mild means weak, they are wrong. In traditional terms it is a style rather than a strength (as you noted :-)
The often mentioned Sarah Hughes Dark Ruby Mild is a good example. Brewed to an old recipe from pre-water down times it surprises many people.
Should be marked on the pump clip - although in many cases the ABV print is so small even people with 20/20 vision need a mgnifying glass.
Possibly Tower Winter Spirit 5.0%
Following on from 's message. . .
The ABV will always be marked on the cask. Send somebody to the cellar.
When did you last look at a set of casks from small brewers?
A good proportion don't have the ABV marked on the cask, some barely have a label identifying which brewery it is never mind the beer or the ABV. There seems to be a tendency to mark that on the paperwork and have the drayman identify casks by colour bands.
6.0 ABV
Yes, but it was a Tetleys pub, and when I asked for "mild" I had this idea that I might just get Tetleys Mild. In fact from memory it was some Coach House beer. On previous occasions I had got Tetleys Mild (ABV 3.3).
BTW Anybody remember the late lamented Merrie Monk (Marstons)? I agree that not all milds are low gravity.
Brian
I thought that, but couldn't find a description of it. The beer I had was definately a porter, dark and slightly fruity with a mild smoky flavour.
Does this sound like Winter Spirit?
The Tower brewery is in Burton
There used to be a Tower Brewery in Tadcaster. Was Bass, then Coors. Good god! Just attempted to visit the Coors web site. They won't let you in unless you tell them your date of birth!

And it gets worse. Every time you try to navigate, you have to re-enter it exactly as before. I think I'll give this one a miss.
