Greene King Old Speckled Hen rip-off

I went into a pub last night that sells OSH. They've just finished all the

5.2% and are now selling the 4.5%. Unsurprisingly, the price hasn't reduced. When queried, the barmaid said the wholesale price hadn't changed.

Either GK are ripping us off, or the barmaid was covering up for the landlord. Either way, I won't be drinking OSH again.

The St Austell Tribute was quite nice.

More fool you for going near GK.

Is St.Austell independent or another GK-ism now.

St Austell is an independent small regional whose beers (especially Tribute) are often found in GK pubs that sell 'guests' from the GK list.

OSH has been virtually indistinguishable from Abbot for years now so it was difficult for GK pubs to sell it without cannibalizing Abbot sales. Reducing the strength allows GK to market IPA/OSH/Abbot as complementary beers.

Will they reduce the price of OSH in pubs? What do you think? :-)

It's been rubbish for quite a few years. Now it's just weaker rubbish.

If they hadn't fannied around with the strengths of Ruddles Best and County a couple of years ago, they'd have had a fairly balanced portfolio without needing to change OSH either.

Pretty soon we'll live in a country where there are no beers weaker than

3.5% and none stronger than 5%.

Possibly because they know a few brewers and know what the production cost is versus the sales price? Not that I've been on a session taking flat pack poly-pins and helping inflate and fill them on a viciously frosty pre-christmas morning for a few years.

Of course the incidence of fair play does seem to tend to diminish with increased size.

"Greene King has also pledged to pass on the entire duty saving to the wholesale price, meaning that licensees may make a £2,300 additional profit by selling 30 barrels of the new 4.5 per cent, compared to the existing 5.2 per cent."

So it was the barmaind covering for the landlord, in collusion with GK. Used to like OSH as well.
