mallorca

Off to the sunny isle for a break and wondered if there were any good places to drink. Going to be round the Cala Millor/Cala Bona area.

Thanks.

Can't you get the Estrella range, if you get Catalan wines?

I was there for two weeks until July 19. Almost each day four of us got through over a bottle of gin, most of a bottle of vodka (with Tia Maria), at least two bottles of good quality rioja (often four), at least one bottle of cava (often two), and several beers (mostly San Miguel, although I bought some Damm as well on the first day).

Still had time to go to the beach, swim in our pool, eat in restaurants, climb a mountain, see fireworks, go shopping and visit a water park.

Since we spent a lot of time at our rented villa, we didn't appear drunk in public once.

A few years ago we reckoned we'd got through about 56 bottles of wine, on top of the gin, etc, etc.

I have to admit we brought some gin home with us. It's now sitting beside two of the three litre bottles we took home last August.

When we were in Mallorca in June, I thought the choice of bottled German wheat beers was pretty fair, with Erdinger (including Krystal and Dunkel), Schneide, Paulaner, Koenig Ludwig, Franziskaner and others, tolerable at around 2.50 - 3 Euros per 500ml bottle.

Then there were several decent standard German beers available, such as Bitburger, Konig, Diebels Alt and the one that I considered best value, Warsteiner on draught at 3.75 Euros per litre (though when you're sitting there with your steins, the waiters and other customers tend to chat to you in German. They just expect us Brits to go for the widely-available John Smiths Smooth if not the S.M.)

San Miguel of course was much cheaper but I'd sooner pay a bit more for something with greater enjoyment.

Cheers,

Paul

Well that's stopped me worrying about my drinking.

I don't know much about that area, but I think your best bet is going to be imported German and Belgian bottled beers. Not much chance of getting Crudgington's Six X on draught out there!

Well that's OK then. By comparison, after a bottle and a half of Rioja, I'd probably need to go lie down.

What puzzles me is how he's got any of his duty-free left, the rate he drinks :)

Well, I couldn't drink at that kind of rate all the time - after two weeks of boozing every day on hols I cut back a lot at home. Just the occasional social drink at weekends with friends. I haven't touched (or drunk) a G&T since Spain.

However, I had friends for Spanish style dinner last night after a trip to Borough Market and we drank cava and rioja. I probably won't have anything alcoholic until next weekend.

Just back from Mallorca.

Nothing of merit out there on draught - San Liguel dead cheap though.

So had to have Franzikaner Weissbier >
