Recommendations sought in Cologne

I doubt you will find a brewpub in Cologne which brews anything other than Koelsch, although I'm happy to be corrected.

You must visit, regardless, Paeffgen in Friesenstrasse (give Marcel my regards) and Malzmuehle (Frueh is also worth a look-in).

If you have a real penchant for something different, get a train to Duesseldorf (30 minutes) and go to zum Uerige, Schumacher, and Fuechschen for some excellent Alt beer.

I may travel to Duesseldorf during my stay there as I do have a free day. I'm also considering Bonn and/or Dortmund too - are these recommended too?

I'll look into the bars you've mentioned as I've not tried much altbier before

about 15-20 minutes on foot from Düsseldorf HBF to the city centre, where Uerige, Füchsschen etc. are.

Dortmund used to be a major brewing town, with a number of breweries. As I passed through 2 weeks ago, they seemed to be pulling down the old Dortmunder Union brewery, close to the main railway station, so I don't know what the situation is these days. The beers were all pilsner/lager-style beers though, IIRC>

You'll like the Altbier, I promise you.

zum Uerige is close to the Rhine, Fuechsschen is just off the town centre. Any of the locals will point you in the right direction.

If you want to cut down the walk, get the U-Bahn from the main station to the old town (Altstadt).
