Truman's pubs

can someone tell me whatever happened to Truman's pubs. I remember that they all disappeared a number of years ago. Were they absorbed by one of the larger brewers, or did they just go out of business. The truman's Pub I remember most used to be located inside of Hammersmith tube station, on the Metropolitan line side (now Hammersmith and city), it used to be quite grotty, but had character. Its now an awful tapas bar, serving crap spanish beer, and generating deafening music.

If any one knows of the history of what happened, I would be interested.

Thanks

Mark

Truman's were taken over by Watney Mann in the early 70s to become Watney Mann & Truman. Their pubs remained badged as Truman's well into the 80s and indeed in the early 80s a new range of Truman's real ales - including a mild - was introduced. Ben Truman became the standard keg beer in Watney's pubs, replacing Red.

I assume that, like Watney's, the pubs just progressively lost their identity as they were repainted and refurbished.

I first remember this pub from the late 1980s as "the Doctor's Dilemma" a curious attempt at a theme pub. I wasn't aware of any connection with Trumans.

There are still quite a few Truman tiled pub exteriors in East London, which I would hope are now listed.

IIRC, Watneys pubs all had a makeover in the early 80s with a new logo, and the distinctive Trumans branding went then. I remember thinking this was crazy at the time, given that the Trumans brand had escaped most of the bad publicity that had affected Watneys in the

70s. The Trumans cask beers were *much* better than the Watney equivalents - Antler, Stag etc.

Yes, my recollection of it being a Truman,s pub would have been very late 70s to early 80s. It wasn't until I started working in Hammersmith a few years ago, that I noticed that It had become the tapas bar.
