Breweries in Austria

I've been spending a lot of time in Zell am See lately (for business) from Boston. Almost everywhere I go, the beer of choice seems to be Stiegl. It's not bad, but are there better options in Austria?

Sure, there are better options, but the best way to find out what's in a given Austrian town, beer-wise, is to pick up a copy of _Conrad Seidls Bierguide_. It covers all the Austrian states in a comprehensive fashion. You might find some Trumer Pils or other interesting beer if you look around, or maybe Fohrenburger beers. But if the local beer choice is Stiegl, you could do worse.

Indeed, Trumer is a wonderful example of a proper, hoppy pils :o)

I did find a pamphlet of Herr Seidl's in a brewpub near Wien while on holiday a couple of years ago. The brewpub that brews a stout...sorry, I can't recall the name. Fun little place, near enough to "Beethoven's Ruhe", IIRC.

FWIW, the original poster's beer guide website was indeed very helpful during my week in Austria in early 2002...highly, highly recommended. I can't wait until I can get back to Wien again...
