Fermenting in Bottle

Hey Everyone,

Newbie here...is there anyway to tell after you have bottled your brew wether or not it is carbonating? Can you see airbubbles like you can in in the airlock?

Thanks

hi J. after a week or two you should not be able to see through the bottom of the bottle anymore because of the sediment. If it is still clear as when you bottled it wount be carbonated. open a test bottle and pour yourself a glass;this is the best way.

"Michael Mowbray"...

I've heard it suggested that during bottling, fill one 12 oz plastic soda bottle with the as yet uncarbonated beer. Use it as the "test" bottle to check for carbonation, as Michael says.

I am new to brewing so some of the experienced here may not agree but I have found that 2ltr soda bottles make great bottling containers. I can usually just squeeze the bottle to get an idea of how it is carbonating. Even the 16oz sized bottles are good to use for testing the readiness.

Uh, why? What's the problem? I don't use plastic bottles for everything ( I usually keg) but for those times I go whitewater rafting and want to take some homebrew along, plastic is a far better choice than glass.
