How long to secodary ferment?

Sep 23, 2004 2 Replies

I am working on my second batch. I have a Irish red ale with an OG of .040 How long do I let it set until I can bottle and drink it.. I put it in secondary on the 20th of august. Next question How long SHOULD I let it rest in the bottles before drinking?

Cheers! Nate

I usually go a couple weeks.

Give it a couple weeks to carbonate. You can try one sooner if you like.

Well, it's been in secondary for more than a month then. I'm just a newbie, but I'd suggest you siphon it into your bottling bucket to get rid of any sediment, add your priming sugar solution, and then bottle. It's tempting to try the beer too soon after bottling, but the carbonation takes a couple of weeks for me. The flavor seems to keep improving as the beer ages in the bottles too.
