proper cleaning agent for plastic fermenter

I'm about to do my first beer kit batch and I'm wondering what would be the proper product for cleaning out the plastic fermenter before sterlizing it. I know you don't want to use anything that could scratch the fermenter or anything scented but what product is that? Is there something from the grocery store I can buy? It's too far to go to the homebrew store for cleaning stuff.

Napisan and a soft cloth does it nicely.

cheers, Ross.

Napisan is an effective cleaner, I personally wouldn't use it for food containers but I'm sure many people have done so without croaking, at least right away :-)

Don't get me wrong, I only base this on an offhand comment made by a dude at Hucon chemicals re cyano-blah-blah, not any hard evidence. Well that and the fact that Napisan don't mention one food related application on the pack I have in the laundry. If you are not overly paranoid, go ahead and use it and rinse well.

I personally use sodium percarbonate but it might be difficult to find someone who will sell small quantities (I had to buy a 25kg bag).

Dishwashing liquid is at least designed for food containers but I could live without the brightening agents and other crap they put in it.

If you have some caustic soda that is a pretty good cleaner to - just be careful with it.

Notes I have made about cleaning and sanitising can be found at:

Oxyclean or another substance I get from the local brew shop called one step.

If you don't have either, you can use bleach in cold water, at approx 1 tsp / gallon. Don't use warm water or more bleach. Let soak for a minimum of 30 min, then rinse with hot water, and let dry.

Anything special you need to do after the 2 hrs or just the usual rinsing?

I would also reccomend a Non-Chlorine bleach.
