Although it is more than likely that Lew and I somewhat disagree on the specific Pu'erhs that are "quite good" in this regard, we do agree that small factories can and often do make superb Pu'erhs. NeoCathay, I think you are just a little bit dogmatic, if I might use that term. Nonetheless, a person of strong opinions is always welcome.

Which, if you combine with real Pu'er, you can develop some very complex Pu'er.

Is there any puer being sold on the Chinese auction site TaoBao that you consider poor or fake? AFAIK there are some puer regulations accounting for a quality standard, factory and grade. If somebody is selling compressed black tea as puer with a fake wrapper or recent crops as aged puer then that is the type of fraud that goes with any consumer product. I like the smaller factories because I don't think they've changed their processing to account for mass consumption based on an economic model like Menghai or Xiaguan. I've recently have been buying some puer that comes from the "Tribes" and not the factory. The texture and feel is completely different. My minimum definition for Puer is fermentation which might be natural or artifically introduced.

Also, the further north you go here in China, the less chances that you will be able to get good pu. This doesn't go for all shops and markets, but with shipping the way it is here in China, I wouldn't trust it. If you want to do dealing with online vendors, look for someone that's in the South.
