IS IT STILL GOOD?

I had ordered from The Stash Company a tea collection of various types & flavors. I am coming across now some packages that are 5 months past the stamped date. It was a few months ago when I ordered this large collection. It smells fine from the outside of the wrapper... but is it safe to still use? Thanks you! ..Mindy

Safe - probably. Flavour - maybe not. Especially greens. Are these bags??? Or loose?? Shen

I would think almost undoubtedly safe- but don't serve them to company until you've checked them out yourself first for flavor. Toci

It's safe to use. Fifty years from now, it will still be safe to use. Whether it will taste good or not, though, is another question. But it will only hurt your sensibilities.

I have some green Stash teas I got at one of their closeouts a couple of years ago with no expiry date. The tea came in a heavy lined cellophane paper bag with fold down tab ends. I just checked and still smell good tea aroma. The expiry date on tea is meaningless if properly stored at retail and home. Most of the teas on the discount shelves are simply past expiry. That is money in your pocket. The expiry date I've seen used is two years past packaging. If I can smell the tea through the retail packaging or the packaging is ruptured I give it a pass. I always boil water for tea because it is an agricultural product.

(smile) I am getting so educated here. Thanks for all the info. The teas are bagged & are individually wrapped in a cellophane lined paper wrapper with a tab at the end. Some have an expiration date & some do not. The ginseng... bergomot.. jasmine.. & chamomile are not too tasty to me.. so I had to put them aside. I will not make such a large mail order again... since I did have at the time a large tea supply from just going to the supermarket & tea cafes which amounts to numerous other brands/flavors/types. I never pass up to go down the tea aisle. I also boil my water. I have not bought loose tea... but I have tried it though. I really don't see any difference with taste... other than it is easier to experiment to make other flavors by mixing some of this & some of that. ..Mindy

Regarding the flavoring, in most cases the flavors are sprayed on to the leaf and after about a year the flavor will start to fade.when exposed to air again the flavors do evapoarte in my experience fairly fast especially if it is alchol based application which is common with all natural flavors .On oil based the shelf life usually is longer. however best before date certainly does not mean NO GOOD AFTER;) Maurice
