Newbie in tea, was coffee drinker

I was a coffee drinker and was addicted to it. My doctor told me to stop. Well, I asked him about drinking tea and he told me that it was not only good but beneficial to the health. for the last 6 months, I have been drinking tea and I kinda fallen in love with the drink. Can anyone suggest me which are the best for health? I hear a lot about Darjeeling Tea. Is it really good? Why is it so famous? Where can I buy a kg of Darjeeling tea?

Many years ago the belief was that only green tea had significant health benefits. In recent years it has been discovered that virtually any real tea has health benefits, although there may be some variation in benefits between the types (black, oolong, green, pu-erh). If you don't understand what these types are, read the tea FAQ at

Darjeeling is a style of black tea which comes from the Darjeeling district of India. Sure, it's good, but so are many other styles of tea. It depends on your taste. I personally am not a big fan of Darjeeling teas but many people like them. I suppose part of the reason they are so famous is that they are among the first teas to be widely drunk in the west.

Note that there are probably at least a hundred different Darjeelings, and there will be significant variation in taste among them.

As a newbie, here is the place I would recommend you start buying tea online:

You can buy a kg of Darjeeling there, but they also sell sample sizes that only make a few cups, so that you can decide whether you like the tea or not. I believe they restrict the number of samples you can buy during their busy period in December, as providing samples is very labor intensive for only a small return.

I sugest you try a variety of teas to find what you like best. Many people like to drink Darjeeling Tea, but there is a whole world of teas out that that taste great. From what I can tell in literature, all of them claim some health benefits. If you want to "maximize" your health benefit, some here might suggest Puerh, but this particular tea may not be to your tastes. The darker oolongs are also good, and I believe it was Bai Hao Oolong was made to compete against the Darjeeling market. (Someone who knows correct me if I got this wrong)

Yes I think Special Teas is a good vendor, too. There was a time when they did not offer sample sizes (which for them is 1/2 oz.). Now they do on many of their teas, but they don't yet on quite a few of them as well.

- I had written to them about the teas they sale and they are ready to send me free samplers. However, in one of the posts i found that some members were against them as spamming in this forum. Has anyone tried them? If yes, please tell me your experience with them. How are they in actual working?

Thanks "Tea", yes, indeed I got some darjeeling tea from a darjeeling based merchant. I bought two kgs, one Kalej Valley Oolong tea and the other Puttabong Clonal SFTGFOP-1. Although I am not so much familiar with the names, I hope I got the right ones. They told me that it would be delivered within 7 days and guess what, on the fifth day, I received the same. The teas are really great, half of the tea I received was shared among my friends who are tea drinkers from the very end. I am just a new comer. They told me that the tea is really of superior quality and fresh. I too really liked the teas. Cheer to great Darjeeling Teas!

Keep me updated. Its a great forum.

Hello Aloke, there was a little fuss by some of the forum members regarding the site from whom I got the teas. But to tell you frankly, the site had a very customer service and they lived up to their promise by delivering the tea before they had promised. And yes, regarding the tea, I have already written.

Which one of their Darjeeling's did you get? I didn't see any way to order samples from them.

1 Kg of tea will last a long time in my house. I would really prefer to buy a really aromatic flavorful Darjeeling tea to begin with, rather than try them out one at a time ...

Well, I didn't order any samples. Actually, I was convinced by them through email. I saw that their teas get sold very very fast. Most of the teas I saw was already sold and was not available. Well regarding the sample thing, I suggest you write to them and I am sure that they will come up with something to satisfy your answer. I contacted them through their Sale's email address ie. snipped-for-privacy@darjeelingnews.net Why don't you contact them and see for yourself. Please update on this forum how they respond to you. Just curios you know. To me they were magnificient.

Too late for me. Both their Puttabong teas are already sold out :-(

You are correct about them being cheaper than other vendors.. Maybe next spring ...

Well, I had told you that their teas are sold very fast. Infact I had asked them about their low rates and they said they had a simple reson - "Their teas don't route through various other tea merchants which is normally the case with other merchants. There is no middleman involved inbetween them, just the tea garden and their company". This sounded really amazing to me and that is why I ordered and I don't regret it.

You can try your luck next season when the new teas are out. Please keep me updated on your tea endeavours.
