1972 Balmenach

A few days ago, I picked up in a miniature bottle of Hart Brothers 1972 Balmenach, port wood aged, cask strength (50.1% abv), bottled in 2002. I just finished sipping it, and have to report that it's a wonderful whisky from a distillery I've somehow missed previously. The flavor was somewhat like Balvenie port wood blended two-to-one with Talisker, but richer and more nuanced. Very, very nice, indeed.

One of my first "miniature experiences" was that very whisky. A quick visit to K & L Wine Merchants told me that a 750mL bottle sold for more than $200 so I was pleased to have tasted such a fine dram at such a reasonable price. A truly delightful whisky with nice port notes against a malty body.

FWIW, my miniature was $12 at a shop in St. Helena, CA.
