Fake Whisky

Anyone seen this?

I've bought some bottles on ebay - I think everything I've bought so far has been genuine - but I happen to have a 1984 18YO Macallan from one of the people noted on this page (in the round carton though, which is a good thing) and wonder now if buying bottles on ebay is a prudent thing to do anymore.....

Hi Gladys,

I've never bought (or sold) anything on eBay, so I don't know. When I want/need a new bottle, I save up enough money, then go to my local whisky store, Wine & Liquor Depot.

I always know what I'm getting. I need to replace my Jameson's 18 right now. ;-)

Understand - but what do you do when you save up your money for a bottle that is no longer produced? Say a nice 1985 Macallan 18? The new stuff just isn't anywhere near as tasty IMO.

Buying collectible or rare whisky on EBay is a "Buyer be- Very Very Very -Aware" transaction. The risk of rip-off is high. It might be better to stay within the realm of known reputable dealers and auctions that have a good track record. Otherwise, do your research, ask lots of questions and look for the clues that the bottle may have been tampered with.

The reward of scoring a true collectible or rare whisky is twice as great when you have spent a lot of time working up to the purchase. It's expensive, but you knew that already.

Regards,

Daniel

You're probably right, Gladys. My tastes may not be as discerning as yours. If they don't have what I had in mind, I get something else I like or have wanted to try. Over the years, there've been many things I wanted, but couldn't get. Oh, well, at least I'm still alive. Right now, my Aberlour a'bunadh Vat 8 is almost gone, so that and the Jameson's 18 are on my list, although it might be a while before I can get up there.

I can't afford collectible or rare whiskys. I have about a dozen SMS's, all open and enjoyed regularly by myself and a few friends. The most expensive was $165 about four years ago. I'm satisfied.
