FWP again

I opened a bottle of Bowmore Darkest that I had saved from a few years ago.. It had the FWP taint . I wrote a letter to Bowmore in the US and got this reply.....

"I assume you had opened the bottle of Darkest for the first time just recently. Scotch can change in the bottle after it has been opened due to oxidation, etc. just like any food product can. Spirits generally last longer because of the alcohol content unless you left the cap off. If you opened it for the first time and experienced an unfamiliar odor it may be that you aren't accustomed to single malt scotch or, more likely, you never tasted an Islay malt before. Islay whiskies are known for their peaty, smoky, salty, iodine flavors and aromas. Islay malts are very esoteric and not generally appreciated by the novice scotch consumer. Lagavullin and Laphroaig are other examples of Islay whiskies. Maybe you should try a Highland malt next time. It will certainly be less peaty and may suit you better. Bowmore has won more awards than any other single malt whisky in the world. "

As a "self styled whisky connoisseur" (or whatever the phrase was), I'd be totally disgusted with that reply.

At least when I had a bottle of FWP in the UK, Bowmore requested it was returned - they paid the postage - lab tested it and wrote back to me to tell me the bottle was at fault, but because it had been "corked". They replaced the bottle with a new one.

I guess US customer services has a lot to learn from the UK's. Which to be honest gob-smacks me because I thought the UK sucked for customer service.

I keep avoiding Bowmore for the time being. Even if a faulty bottle is replaced, I don't want the trouble. FWP whisky shouldn't have passed quality control anyway... Plenty of other great Islay's to choose from!

Agreed.

Which is why I've not bought a Bowmore since. Too much of a risk. The process took over 3 weeks. Not something I'd recommend. It's also rather embarrassing when you have a bunch of tasters round - all self styled whisky connoisseurs - and crack open a bottle of FWP. :-(

Caol Ila and Lagavulin always seem to get my money these days... Oh and Talisker gets a good look in.
