1989 Pichon Lalande

I have heard this vintage of Pichon Lalande was negatively affected by brettomyeces (brett). But a friend of mine had some recently and said it was very good. What is your opinion, dear readers?

While I haven't had the priviledge of tasting it, a very useful tool for answering questions like this is the Cellartacker web site

formatting link
where you can view a cross-section of tasting notes on this very wine. After such a perusal, I find that only one person found the wine bretty, and even that person loved the wine after half an hour's airing. It may be that only a fraction of the output was tainted by brett that year, or that the level of brett is low enough that most people don't mind it (there are varying levels of sensitivity to brett, too). Most of the notes talk about tobacco, spices and acidity, none of which sounds like brett to me.

I had a bottle of 1989 three years ago and found this wine particularly elegant, on the feminine side for a Pauillac. Definitely less "chunky" than Montrose from that year. If ratings make any sense, I would rate it 92. Don't expect it to last for another decade or so.
