1996 Lucien Boillot Volnay 1er "Les Angles"

I pulled a bottle from the cellar of 1996 Lucien Boillot Volnay 1er "Les Angles" last night with salmon. I bought it at close out back in '99. I haven't had many wines gain "weight" and wasn't sure if wine can gain weight in the bottle but in this case I was stunned. I had pretty much written the wine off years ago as thin and acidic. This is the first bottle I've opened in years and fully expected to pour it down the drain but .....surprise! The wine was medium to dark red in the glass. Nose of cherry, minerals and flowers. Smooth and sleek on the palate with medium weight and density. Plenty of black cherry and raspberry notes with a touch of tannic toughness. OVerall it drank well. "B-"
